He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel,
let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
(
Matthew 27:42)
Who was that man on the cross??
(By: Pastor L.R. Simas, Sr.)
4-26-07
The scene opens with a man on a cross hardly recognizable as
such as Isaiah spoke of it. (Isaiah 53:2)  This is not just a man!
This is the Lord's Christ! (Luke 2:26) While the people assembled
there, some believing He was who He said He was, and others
who were quite sure He was not who He claimed to be, and thus
death was the only remedy and final solution. The problem was
that they who opposed this man, knew not that they were
playing the role in which was prophesied of Him.
Now, they were thinking that the death of this man would put
an end to the radical things that were abounding there. And all
of it would come to a complete finish. Again, they that sought to
end this man's life and with it His ministry, would only find
their efforts would only serve to enlarge it all the more. For they
who had sought to put an end to this movement would soon
learn that they were totally wrong!
Who was this man that the powers that be at that time were so
threatened?? What did this man offer that would cause such
problems for the rulers of His time?? Was what this man said
and taught right and true??
They had every right to be in fear as they would find that He
was indeed who He said He was!  This man said such things as,
...Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." (John
2:19)  Also, when confronted by the governor of this land this
man would answer simply "
Thou sayest." (Matthew 27:11)
These are but a few of the many things said by this man. The
man hanging by nails to a cross! Condemned for a crime
committed by you and me! Who was this man that He should
suffer and die for us and in our place?? The answer to who was
he is stated in Matthew’s gospel. Turn with me to Matthew 16:
13-17, where we will see for ourselves what was said by this
man!
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he
asked his disciples, saying,
Whom do men say that I the Son of
man am?
14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist:
some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He
saith unto them,
But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the
Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him,
Blessed art thou,
Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto
thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
The answer is that this man was and still is exactly who was
accurately described as the Christ, the Son of God! Jesus then
having died once and only once completed His earthly ministry
and opened the way to heaven for anyone who would desire it.
The earthly personal ministry of our Lord Jesus being finished
has for us just begun.
Jesus stated in His prayer to His Father and our Father the
following, "
I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for
them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
" (John 17:9)
Maybe this was the reason that the people and rulers of that day
feared Jesus and sought His death?? Or was it a stronger
statement that Jesus uttered?? Maybe the following was it?? “
I
pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but
that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the
world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy
truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world,
even so have I also sent them into the world.
"  (John 17:15-18)
Jesus prayed of God to keep His disciples Peter, John, Matthew,
Mark, and Paul who would be called later, here on the earth so
that the rest of us would learn of Jesus through them.
The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back as they say was
when the Jews leveled the charge of "
making Himself the Son of
God
" (John 19:7) against Jesus. Of course they had that part
right! He was and is all God and was all man too!
I believe these just might have been the words that might have
done it! They accused Jesus of "
...making himself the Son of God.
And so He was and remains to this day!
We are now back where we began. Who was this man who was
nailed to the cross?? He was and is Jesus, the Son of God! Jesus!
"
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be
equal with God:
" (Philippians 2:6) Jesus, The king of the Jews
and King of Kings! Jesus! Lord of lords! Jesus, "
Neither is there
salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven
given among men, whereby we must be saved.
" (Acts 4:12)
We know who He was and why His being crucified had to be
done. Here in this last verse today we see why it only had to
happen once! "
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of
many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the
second time without sin unto salvation.
" (Hebrews 9:28)
As I offer prayer for you and thank Jesus for all He has made
possible through His once only sacrifice, I remind you my friends,
Jesus died for you, will you live for Him??
