"But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" (Luke 22:48). Are You a Judas?? (By: Pastor L.R. Simas, Sr.) 10-02-08
Can you imagine how Jesus felt knowing what had just been fulfilled? Now imagine how someone you know feels if you are their Judas. Or how you would feel if someone else was a Judas to you! Judas is most probably the most recognized person in the Bible. Too bad it's for something horrendously horrible. He didn't begin that way I'm sure. But then the Judas' of today have! The Judas of the bible had a problem with double mindedness, ego, and money. How many of us have had the same problem?? Judas' problems were big problems as they would be his undoing. Judas was an Apostle and held a trusted position within the inner circle of our Lord. He held the bag or was the treasurer. The office of treasurer is a position which requires a knowledgeable man in financial matters also a person which is trust worthy. John would sum up what Judas really was in his statement he says of Judas, "This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein" (John 12:6). The bible speaks of him as a betrayer. The first several places in Scripture where Judas is mentioned are as a member of the Apostles are Matthew 10:4, Mark 3:19, and Luke 6:16. Notice that Judas is always listed last and always in the negative. Is it any wonder? The infamous name of “betrayer” has throughout the centuries stuck. I know of no one that has given the name "Judas" to any male child regardless of religion. I don't think I need to go into great detail as to how Judas became known as the betrayer of Jesus. All I need to do is remind you of what Jesus’ words were to Judas to make clear why the name stuck. Jesus says, "...Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" (Luke 22:48). How does this same Judas apply to us today?? One way is if we say to someone they are a friend and we turn and speak untruths about them. Another way might be to have the reverse done to us. Still yet another way is to say one thing while knowing that what was said is not going to be followed through. As an example, someone borrows money from you (or you from them) knowing all the while that the intent to repay the loan is never going to happen. Imagine if you were accused of causing someone's death. And the only person that could exonerate you is a Judas type of person. How would you feel knowing that the only person that could help, either wouldn't or wouldn't be believed! Now imagine being Jesus!! How must have He felt?? These are a few examples I'm sure there are many more. This is what we do when we choose to make untrue assertions about others only later to be found out a liar. Or others do this same thing to us and we suffer the consequences needlessly. Sometimes these consequences are never reversed and life as we knew it changes forever!! All because of a Judas! Like the Judas of the Bible had purposed in his heart to commit what in my opinion would be the most horrible act in recorded history. After having lived, learned, and felt the love that only Jesus could give. Then to go ahead with forethought and malice to turn on and betray the Lamb of God! To me this is incomprehensible at best. Everyone does things however, when what you do injures or causes irrevocable harm on someone and it is done without regard for a person’s good or someone's character (maybe yours) is permanently damaged. This picture or type of being a Judas!! I hope that you my friend never take this road to repay someone for what is perceived as a wrong doing to you or by you to someone else. Judas was what one type was most probably meant as spiritual wickedness in high places. For he was spiritual at one time then took on this wickedness and forever more will be known as the betrayer. Don't let anger, jealousy, hatred, and envy do this to you and may it not be done onto you. Remember the words and commandment Jesus gave as He said, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another"(John 13:34). I think this was said to avoid the problem which is the subject of this writing this month. Let me close with the following: I'm sure you know what happened to Judas in the end?? He realized all too late what he had done was wrong! He chose to end his life and went to his own place. If you don't want to end up in a place that believe me will not be to your liking. Then may I suggest that you examine very carefully what it is you are about to do or may have already done. Or maybe you have had done to you. In either case go to God in prayer and seek (or ask) forgiveness for yourself or on behalf of the one who harmed you. John said, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (I John 1:9). There is a little of Judas in all of us. It's called sin!! If we choose to serve sin then we are assured of hell as our future. If we turn from sin and choose to serve God then we can look to a home in heaven. Judas caused the events that led to the death of Jesus and God raised Jesus from the dead that we would believe and follow Him. What will you do now?? Will you too "betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss"? In this case will you deny Christ? Will you remain a Judas (in type) and die in your sin and go to that place where the worm dieth not?? Or take Judas' final act and remember what sin did to Jesus and repent?? Something Judas couldn't bring himself to do. While you're thinking on these things remember, Jesus died for you, will you live for Him?? Please feel free to e-mail or write at the address below.
