What's wrong with kids today??
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not
depart from it. (
Proverbs 22:6)

heard this question??  In today's world it has become all too
common.  So why are the children both young and old acting as
because we have no (or have forgotten) standard. That standard
for me is the Bible, The King James Bible a subject for another
day. I've heard Moms and dads say, "When I have kids I'm not
going to do to them what was done to me". How many times
have we said to a child (age usually doesn't matter) "If you do
that again (whatever the "that" might be) your going to your
room for the day"!  Does this make your kid mad?? No!  Why??
Because they are not being taught that bad behavior is not
acceptable! Nor is being disrespectful also not tolerated. No, they
simply say some utterance that I'll not repeat here and go off to
their room.
You have sent the child to their room to have them learn
something, right?? What is it they learned?? How about getting
better at the game they are playing or the on-line one. They either
listen to music (the kind you'd not allow if you knew the lyrics)
or watch television, most probably programming that you'd not
allow as well. So what have they learned?? Not a thing!!    
I know you’re saying "so what do you expect me to do"? I don't
expect anything at all. However,
God does! I know I am going to
get a few (probably most all of you) angry with me. Try and put
aside the anger till you've heard me out, okay??
I've heard people say "Why does
God let bad things happen to
good (I use the term loosely) people". Or "How could
God let this
happen to my child”?? You hear or see children (or young adults)
dying in the streets or a child who is simply in the right place at
the wrong time. All this happens as the result of guns getting
into the hands of our children (young adults). If you have looked
at the newscasts or read the local (and not so local) newspapers
we see this time and time again. And where does the blame go??
Right!!
God!
Okay then let’s look at what is written (or spoken) by
God in His
book and through men by
His inspiration. You may have heard
the expression "Spare the rod and spoil the child" by Samuel
Butler (1612-1680) . Where does that come from?? You guessed
it, the Bible! Only here are the original words as found in
Proverbs 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he
that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
The word betimes today means early, or more probably, soon. The
proverb is speaking of being ready to do something to cause a
change in the behavior of the son (or daughter). The word to
chasten (chasteneth) means to correct or better still cause
correction. If this was done more today maybe the problems of
today would not exist.
The first five books of the Bible are referred to as the Torah, or
the Law and were written (with God's inspiration) by Moses.
They also speak to the subject of correction.  Please note that
public execution was the way life went in that day.  Have a look
at this:
18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not
obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that,
when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:
It should be understood that this is not a child, but what is
called today as a young adult. This young adult (much like today’
s young adults) flatly refuses to obey his parents in any manner
at all.
19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and
bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his
place;
As was the custom at that time the parents took the son before
the elders (Jewish community leaders).
20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is
stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a
glutton, and a drunkard.
The parents would testify of all they had tried do to bring this
young adult under control and out of his sinful state. The elders
would listen to both sides and make a decision based in the law.
21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that
he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all
Israel shall hear, and fear. (Deuteronomy 21:18-21)
This is the lawful result and would serve as a strong deterrent to
others as well.
Now what does
God say about children?? Oh, yes, (in part) "train
up a child". This means show, teach (admonish). Are we doing
this today??  How about? “in the way that he should go".  
Meaning: in the paths of righteousness. If this guidance is given
(not forced) in love and with care then the likely outcome might
be “and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. Not because
it was demanded or forced down his (or her) throat. No, it just
might be the course because it is (not becomes) their choice!
Let me close this with the following: What's wrong with kids
today?? You are!! Why?? Because my friend when the
Lord
wrote this proverb it was not just for them of old, it was not just
for our children of today, it was for you and me,
He was (and
still is) speaking to! So we need to be trained up!! It's never too
late to learn. Do you love your kids?? Really!! Then get trained
up and show them the way to go and maybe they will not depart
from it when they (if they) reach your age.
I pray that
God has touched you today and that you have heard
what
He is trying to express to you. I also pray that you don't
have to learn by losing a child (I have had to). May you learn
through what I've shared with you today and feel free to share it
with others.
